Dental implant Benefits & Advantages

  1. An implant tooth is the closest thing to a natural tooth.
  2. Implant are designed to last for decades.
  3. Implants never ever decay
  4. Implants made of titanium do not cause allergic reaction to bone or soft tissue.
  5. Implants preserve jaw bone. When a tooth is lost bone resorbs. ie it disintegrates; that is because the alveolar bone that is critical to supporting teeth has no purpose once the root and tooth is gone.

 Dental Implants disadvantages & Risks

  1. The patient must have enough bone to place an implant. If not then bone grafting is required.
  2. Implants cost much more than dentures or flippers and in spite of marketing Teeth in A Day... as I even do!  It is not routine and cannot be done for every patient,
  3. There are critical structures that can be damaged by dental implants such as the mandibular nerve which will cause numbness in the lip and chin and it could be permanent.
  4. This is the most annoying thing to patients: the time it takes to finish dental implant treatment. It can take months to years.
  5. The cost of treatment. Implants are not cheap. But when you consider they are designed to last for decades it is a great value.
  6. Surgery is required; many appointments are required.
  7. Sometimes a dental implant will fail. Usually the failure happens within a few days to a few months.
  8. When an implant fails it can be catastrophic. That is more bone is lost and the bone has to be rebuilt.
  9. While Dr. Starkey can place dental implants at the time of a tooth extractions it results in a higher failure rate. This is because there is a mismatch of the socket to the dental implant and the result is a less than optimum fit. Or there might be failure due to a chronic infection that goes undetected.
  10. Implants can fail if gums are not healthy. Placing dental implant in a toxic periodontal disease environment is very risky and not wise.
  11. If patients smoke implants can fail more easily.
  12. If patients do not have good overall health implants can fail.
  13. If patients do not keep implants clean or do not come in for a professional cleaning periodically according to what patient condition demands then implants can fail.
  14. If implant is placed in soft bone or sick bone the implant has a higher failure rate.
  15. Bone grafting is often required for dental implants.
  16. Bone grafting that is needed for dental implants also has risk of failure.
